Miracle Worker

The Miracle Worker
by William Gibson

Set in the 1880s, this stirring dramatization of the story of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan is one of the most successful and warmly admired plays of the modern stage. The story begins at night with three adults around the lamplit crib of the infant Helen Keller as they discuss a serious ailment which Helen has just barely survived. While the Captain sees the doctor out, Helen’s mother, Kate, makes the horrifying discovery that because of the illness, the child can no longer see nor hear. The next scene reveals that in the five-and-a-half years since the first scene, Helen has become a willful, feral child, indulged in everything because denial brings tantrums and no one knows how to teach or discipline her. Little Helen, trapped in her secret world, is now bitter, violent, spoiled and almost animal like. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind waiting to be rescued from that dark, tortured silence. Annie's success with Helen comes only after some of the most turbulent, compelling, and emotion-packed scenes ever presented on the stage.

This epic story recounts the struggle against adversity in 19th century France. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, petty thief Jean Valjean is released from his 19-year term and not only becomes and honest man, but the mayor of a prosperous town and a loving adoptive father - violating his parole in the process. The relentless Inspector Javert relentlessly pursues him. Only years later, after Valjean proves his mettle during a bloody student uprising and saves the life of a young man hopelessly in love with Valjean’s adopted daughter, does the ex-convict finally feel fully redeemed.

Originally adapted from Victor Hugo’s timeless novel, Les Misérables, School Edition introduces a new generation to the grand and inspirational story that has touched the hearts of millions.
